Gadget Flexibility
The 4th generation iPad measures 18.5 centimeters across, but the newer model is expected to measure just 17 centimeters from edge to edge. Since it is assumed that Apple will be sticking with the same display area as before, this means that the bezel surrounding the screen should be significantly thinner.
Observers have pointed out that the iPad 5 looks very similar to the iPad Mini 2, which has also been snapped in spy shots in the last few days. This unification of the design of the two new iPads certainly makes sense, although this does not diminish the impressive skill with which Apple has achieved this on a technical level.
Some sources have claimed that the next iPad will be 33 per cent lighter than its predecessor and with Apple slimming down its exterior while retaining the 9.7 inch screen, this certainly seems attainable.
Other aspects of the iPad 5 remain uncertain, although an improved processor is anticipated, along with the potential for a little more memory.
The biggest changes will be instigated by the iOS 7 operating system, bringing with it an overhauled user interface and an array of fresh features to keep this tablet family feeling relevant in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
Hardware improvements such as an eight megapixel rear-facing camera are anticipated, while there are more far-fetched claims about wireless charging capabilities and NFC, although these latter features seem more likely to arrive on the iPad 6 or iPad 7 in 2014 and beyond.
Market Potential
It will be interesting to see how the relationship between the full-sized iPad and the iPad Mini 2 progresses this autumn, particularly in the wake of the success of the smaller tablet in its original iteration.
